Dr Lee Chin Thye is a Senior Consultant Forensic Pathologist with the Forensic Medicine Division, Health Sciences Authority (HSA), and has been in the field since 2007. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and a member of the British Association in in Forensic Medicine. Furthering his interests through postgraduate study, he has been awarded the Diploma in Forensic Medical Sciences from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries and the Postgraduate Diploma in Post mortem Radiology for Natural and Forensic Death Investigation from the University of Leicester.
Dr Lee is the Director of the Operations Branch of the Forensic Medicine Division. As Director (Operations Branch), he and the team of Forensic Technical Officers ensure the smooth running of mortuary operations. His role includes overseeing daily mortuary operations, coordinating with the professional staff and administrative staff, and overseeing programmes such as post mortem computed tomography (PMCT) scanning and the mobile containerised Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) autopsy suite. He is a member of the National Association of Forensic Examiners (NAME) and a member of NAME’s Inspection and Accreditation Committee.
Prior to his current role, Dr Lee was Deputy Director (Professional Development) with the Professional Practice Branch, looking after professional matters including working with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (YLLSoM) as Undergraduate Medical Education Deputy Director. He was also previously appointed as a member of the HSA Professional Board, which provided guidance on professional development, standards and ethics within HSA. He continues to balance his professional duties with teaching and training responsibilities as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at YLLSoM, a Clinical Teacher at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a Lecturer in the Singapore University of Social Sciences law degree programme, and a Member of the Specialist Training Committee for Forensic Pathology. He was awarded the National University of Singapore YLLSoM Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2015. He is a guest editor for the Asian Forensic Science Network newsletter, ForensicAsia.
Dr Lee is a member of the Interpol DVI Pathology and Anthropology Sub-Working Group and works closely with the Singapore Police Force on mass fatalities incident scenario planning. He was involved in the AirAsia QZ8501 air crash disaster victim identification efforts and was presented with the Singapore Police Force Overseas Service Medal for his work. In 2023, he was awarded the National Award Pingat Pentadbiran Awam (Gangsa) (COVID-19) for outstanding contributions in managing the impact of COVID-19.
